The Parent Center serves as a central hub designed to provide parents of prospective and current student with essential information about utilizing academic accommodations and services available for students with disabilities at the University of Kansas. 

Getting Started
To receive disability accommodations, students need to provide the Academic Achievement and Access Center (AAAC) with disability documentation that supports the requested accommodations. Not all IEP’s and 504 Plans contain the necessary information AAAC needs to establish eligibility. Please see our Documentation Guidelines for more information.

The University of Kansas (KU) has specific procedures in place for students requesting academic accommodations. Parents can learn more about these procedures by visiting the ​Accommodation process.

Implementing Academic Accommodations
The Academic Achievement and Access Center (AAAC) facilitates appropriate academic accommodations and auxiliary aids and services that are necessary to afford an individual with a disability an equal opportunity to participate in the University’s programs and activities. Specifically, students must provide written documentation from a qualified professional on the nature and impact of the disability. The student and the AAAC will then engage in an interactive process to determine what, if any, accommodations are appropriate based on the student’s disability and individual needs.

Transition from High School to College
To develop a better understanding of the transition to postsecondary education for students with disabilities, the US Department of Education has an excellent document that provides a wealth of information. Students' Rights to Privacy
Students’ right to privacy is federally protected under the Federal Educational Rights Privacy Act (FERPA). This Act prevents anyone from discussing the presence or participation of a student in any university activity without prior consent from the student. Options for Student Academic Support
A number of options are available for students seeking academic support. First, the professor will outline the following details at the start of the semester: his/her office hours during the semester, whether or not graduate students are available to meet with students, and if a help room or another program is available. In addition, the Academic Achievement and Access Center as well as other units provide services to support the classroom experience (see below for more information).
Learning Strategy Consultations
The AAAC staff meets individually with students who would like guidance on study skills, note-taking, test preparation, and time management. Consultations are available to all students (undergraduate and graduate students) and are free of charge. A student may call 785-864-7733 to make an appointment.
Supplemental Instruction
AAAC Supplemental Instruction (SI) provides peer facilitated study sessions outside of the classroom. Students may attend one or more SI sessions and/or office hours during the week. SI Sessions offer an opportunity for the student to discuss the material, gain study tips, and ask questions. Tutoring Services
AAAC Tutoring Services offers small group, peer led tutoring for a nominal fee of $75.00 per group (per course). Partial fee waivers are available to students who qualify. Tutor groups are KU course specific. Tutor groups are capped at five students per group. Each group meets twice per week all semester long once the group is formed up through Stop Week. AAAC tutors are formally trained and come recommended by at least two KU faculty/instructors. Visit AAAC Tutoring Services to request a tutor group.
If your student would like to become a tutor, please refer him/her to AAAC Tutoring Services. Tutors are paid by the hour on a bi-weekly basis via the KU payroll automatic deposit process.
